New Literary Portraits of the American West

This book focuses on contemporary Nevada fiction as one of the most probing and intense literary explorations of the American West as a whole. Recent fictional representations of Nevada possess a revelatory value in relation to the whole West because they encompass some of the most common thematic trends in contemporary western writing. Actually, the thematic maturation of Nevada fiction over the last four decades often parallels the evolution of postfrontier writing, in particular, its growing departure from the overused topics and images of the formula western. Nevada fiction also possesses some unique and distinctive themes, such as its depiction of Basque immigrants, its emphasis on nuclear testing and nuclear waste, and its portrait of such peculiar cities as Reno and Las Vegas. This study discusses contemporary writing set in Nevada both by Nevadans (Robert Laxalt, Frank Bergon, Willy Vlautin, Phyllis Barber, Claire Vaye Watkins...) and by non-resident authors (Joan Didion, Hunter S. Thompson, Larry McMurtry...), drawing new attention to a remarkable literature that has been too often neglected in discussions of the American West.

Aesthetics of Black Arts Movement: A Study of the Plays of Amiri Baraka, Ed Bullins and Larry Neal focuses comprehensively on the African- American Drama of 60s in general and the Black Arts Movement in specific. It is a research based writing examining the plays of the three distinct Black American playwrights like Amiri Baraka, Ed Bullins, and Larry Neal in the light of the aesthetic analysis of the distinctive features of Black Arts Movement as propagated in the 60s in the so called time of the Second Black Renaissance. The sum and substance of the plays of the playwrights carry out strong messages of the socio-cultural, political, artistic and intellectual awakening of the African- Americans trying to establish their American identity along with African cultural consciousness. Thus, these playwrights emerge as the experimentalists with a view to bringing about social reform in artistic ways ranging from revolutionary and agit-prop plays to street theater and then shifting onto off broad way. The book is useful for reference at postgraduate level dealing with the language and literature of Black drama as well as for the researches in the field of leftist and existential plays.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Larry Brown was an American writer who was born and lived in Oxford, Mississippi. Brown wrote fiction and nonfiction. He graduated from high school in Oxford but did not go to college. Many years later, he took a creative writing class from the Mississippi novelist Ellen Douglas. Brown served in the United States Marine Corps from 1970 to 1972. On his return to Oxford, he worked at a small stove company before joining the city fire department. An avid reader, Brown began writing in his spare time while he worked as a firefighter in Oxford in 1980. The nonfiction book On Fire describes how Brown, having trouble with sleeping at the fire station, would stay up to read and write while the other firefighters slept. His duties as a firefighter included answering fire alarms at Rowan Oak--the home of William Faulkner, now a museum--and the University of Mississippi campus.
